100 things about me
1. I was born in Cape Town on the 21st of March 1970 … don’t know the exact time … how can I find that out now?
2. Therefore don’t quite know what birth sign I am on the cusp of Pieces & Aries.
3. I have one sibling, my brother Michael, who is three years younger than me and worlds cleverer, who I love like, well like a brother.
4. We talk on the phone daily.
5. I was always ‘mommy’s’ girl but now I'm a 'daddy's girl'
6. My parents got married in April 1968. My dad’s id book says he got married on the 12th April, my mom’s said the 09th .. who was confused?
7. Mom gave me my appreciation of books and music & lots of other little things as well – for that I will always be grateful.
8. Mom was also responsible for me being who I am today, she was an example.
9. I have many cousins and my mom always taught us the importance of family and friendships. The last cousin I met was over the internet via email … we still need to meet face-to-face but we are family and that’s what is important.
10. Our house was always filled with music & laughter.
11. My mom taught me how to draw portraits & appreciate art. I still love doing craft work (when I’m in the mood that is)
12. Saturdays at our house in my childhood was my favourite time. We’d (my brother and I) be totally spoilt, get to go with mom to buy comics and sweets, come home devour sweets and ‘veg’ out with comics.
13. In junior school I never excelled academically although I remember winning a prize for speech & drama.
14. I chose a bad high school when I was 12 because ‘all the cools kids were doing it’ and we’d just moved into the area. I stayed there a year and moved to another school in Gardens, Cape Town. Met my SIL there!
15. I still have contact with 2 of the girls I went to school with (S & V) (excluding my SIL, Jaqui & Tania).
16. At school, the only thing I learnt was how to be a bitch (probably a good lesson in hindsight) – nah only joking but it help me anyway.
17. I was a dreamer in high school, often reading a fiction novel in the back of the class. My school reports mostly said, “Karen must wake up and pay attention!” nah not really but it could have said that.
18. I really loved English though and was told I had a talent for writing.
19. I used to wear black masacara to school.
20. We didn’t have many boys at our school, 4 I think? SIL you need to help me remember this? 21. SIL and I used to plan our Friday night’s out as early as a Monday in typing class, we’d plan what we were going to wear etc & the best part before we went out on a Friday night was eating Cheryl’s kos! Lekker memories!!
22. Looking back, it was fun to club and a lot safer than it is now-a-days.
23. It was fun – I miss those days.
24. Looking back now school was not that bad and it’s amazing how often one things back to “the good ol days” the music was good 80’s – depeche mode, rick astley, knickerbockers, shoulder-pads. Good times!
25. I kissed a FEW boys during those years but remained chaste (love that word).
26. I was a virgin up until age 18 when I met B, Mr. Unsuitable the 1st. Mother immediately got paranoid and put me on the pill. Good thing too else I could’ve wound up on welfare with 6 children (am only HALF kidding!)
27. I stayed with B for FOUR, yes four, years and was faithful to him for all that time. He was at the time, the best thing since sliced bread. My parents were always weary of him but tolerated him cos they loved me.
28. During this period I worked as a receptionist then bank clerk. My life revolved around little else but B even to the detriment of my other friends.
29. I wasn’t a goth, but I LOVED black clothing.
30. I’m wondering if I can tell you 100 things about me you don’t perhaps already know.
31. I never smoked or can’t recall drinking much either – perhaps a few Esprit’s.
32. B & I even went as far as looking at engagement rings.
33. I was 21.8yrs when we split up and thought I was ‘over the hill’ and would never meet anyone else ever again. I thought my world would come to an end. I wanted my world to come to an end.
34. I met several people (let’s not go there right now).
35. When I was 22 I had a breast reduction.
36. I made sure that I told B I had had it done! L-O-N-G story!
37. I’ve never had a broken bone – always wanted to have plaster of paris.
38. I didn’t do any drugs (well unless you count diet pills) till the age of 22.
39. I then had an experimental stage with one joint. It was fun. Hey! And it was with my Mom – does that count?
40. I survived this phase thankfully and am grateful for that.
41. During this time I met 1 of my good girlfriends - Sandy. We were the Horlicks Queens. Did I mention it was fun?
42. My friend, Sandy and I once took her new red citi golf to for a drive … we ended up in Ceres at the Belmont Hotel with “stuffed” watermelons. Did I mention it was fun?
43. I will remember that Saturday for ever, it was impulsive and great fun.
44. I’m glad I am still friends with Sandy.
45. Sandy and I both lived in Edgemead – we met through our brothers who are still friends as well.
46. My parents were still married until my mom passed away in August 1998. I miss my mom more than anyone will ever believe.
47. I have lost a few good people and miss them also.
48. Of whom I miss my Mom the most. She was my best friend.
49. And saw me through the best and worst of times.
50. I have had one-night stands, which I am not proud of.
51. I have only gotten drunk once where I puked – never again and I’m not proud to admit it. It was black sambuca and it was in front of GB.
52. I remember the hangover, so bad I could literally not move my head, just sat there and groaned.
53. I can’t stand the smell of sambuca. All my other vices are gone
54. Ok except shopping!
55. I live near one of the best Cape winelands – Durbanville – lovely house.
56. Up until age 30 I had not accumulated much ‘house stuff’ .
57. I thought I would stay at home forever.
58. Then I was introduced to Keith by my SIL. Thanks SIL!
59. We dated for 2 years and got engaged in Scotland on Edinburgh Castle… and my aunt made it a memory I’ll never forget … and we had real champagne & strawberries.
60. It was a complete surprise engagement. Very romantic too!
61. I do not regret a single moment of my life.
62. I wonder if I will regret not becoming a mother
63. I think motherhood inherently changes one
64. It makes you see it’s actually NOT all about you. Hey! Who knew?
65. My oldest friendship I have dates back to 1976 – Tracey O – we have known each other for 30 years.
66. My oldest friend hails back to my first year in junior school. We are reviving our friendship. It’s great to know I had good taste when I was 6.
67. I cry a lot in sad movies.
68. I love reading books that make you feel something. I cry a lot in those too. I love Marian Keyes.
69. I dunk rusks & toasted fish paste in my rooibos tea. Most people hate this about me.
70. Oh I forgot, I almost gave up eating meat when I was with B. I almost did give up a lot of things to keep him happy.
71. I have exposed my skin to too much sun tanning in my youth, the ravages of which are now showing a couple of freckles here and there. I do regret that but hey there’s always Botox!
72. I’ve never had a perfect body!
73. Except my toes, I have really ugly stunning toes – stop laughing SIL.
74. And no bunions.
75. I believe in God.
76. I also believe there is more than one path to God.
77. I believe in my family and friends. I cherish the relationships.
78. I am in need of a serious diet.
79. Am too scared to don a bather this summer.
80. Therefore am considering sarongs and perhaps a frilled-hold-it-all-in one-piece.
81. I procrastinate
82. I am really bad with money and budgeting.
83. I am going to start a serious saving plan soon.
84. I live in the most beautiful city in the world,
85. I’ve been overseas a few times but nothing beats the beauty of Cape Town South Africa.
86. I have a plan to visit overseas again next year. Then again due to (81) and (82) this might never materialize.
87. I can make my friends laugh.
88. Although I was never the life and soul of any party – I love being entertained by others though.
89. Now I just amuse my husband. Often.
90. I believe in the concept of soul mates but also that there is more than one for any given person.
91. I think I have met one so far in my life, my husband K.
92. I love my husband more than life itself, although some days it doesn’t always sound that way.
93. I was introduced to Mr. Right by my best friend from school and now she’s my SIL.
94. I was almost proposed to (see 32) HEY! Duh!
95. I’m learning about myself here as I think of 100 things about me.
96. I would do it again though, in a heartbeat.
97. I can be a bitch. Some people at the end of bad customer service are scared of me. T was scared when she met me and she’s scary herself so I must be!
98. I am shy and insecure in a lot of ways
99. But I am conquering that, the older and wiser I become.
